Hi Jstor! Bless what you do, but I have to know: is there a way you can filter out reviews of articles? I keep trying to find specific articles for some searches and all I get is reviews by other people OF the specific article.
If it does not exist yet, maybe that's a function to look into eventually? It'd sure make my life easier, I bet others agree. If that's not feasible, I understand.
Thanks!
Hi there, yes you can! Here's a video tutorial we put together a while ago.

Do ya'll remember when you could go to that "advanced search" page on google? The page that looked like a library's search engine?
Did you know it still exists??? Cus I sure didn't! It's like it's its (its it's its for good measure) own webpage now, but she lives! You just have to search "google advanced search" and its the first result
Completely worthless info to me personally since I use duckduckgo or ecosia which you should too btw, but hey! Maybe that knowledge will help someone out there since AI SEO blah blah has razed the internet to the ground

we're always joking about tumblr's non-existant search function, but can we talk about the barely-there search parameters in streaming services ?
Like on netflix I can search a movie by genre or by orignial language, not both ?
On youtube you can type search words that are ignored after the second result, and are expected to choose between the same three video recommended on every pages ?
I'm not talking about having a search function as powerful as Ao3 (even if that would be AMAZING), but just the simplest ff.net search menu would be enough for me !!!

Meme + helpful search tutorial ftw!! Also saving the tags, because AO3 volunteers are indeed awesome:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.
summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.
Examples:
summary: Bruce
summary: "Bruce Banner"
summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk
You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.
The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.
expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.
You can use expected_number_of_chapters: -1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.
otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false

Kinda pisses me off when people with even the mildest mental illnesses say "I can reclaim lobotomies cause it would have happened to me"
1. You can't reclaim a historical tragedy that did not happen to you but had real victims. As a lesbian I don't make jokes about forced conversion because real people experienced it and I didn't, and I don't find their pain funny.
2. Lobotomies were not that common, not every mentally ill person got one. It was forced upon the most unwell people living in the psychiatric hospitals. And fun fact, after the invention of antipsychotics, many long term psychiatric facilities closed down because so many people were able to live outside of them, and at the time the drugs were nicknamed "chemical lobotomies". Lobotomies were maiming and torture done to the most mentally disabled people to make them "easier to deal with", most of whom in those facilities were psychotic.
3. If such a tragedy were to be committed today it would be done to the people living in psychiatric hospitals today, not you.
4. It's not a joke, stop treating it like one, take the crimes committed to the most vulnerable mentally ill people seriously and show some goddamn respect for the victims.

I currently do academic research for a living and I learned stuff from this post. Thanks @jstor!
Searching best practices on JSTOR
Hi Tumblr researchers,
As promised, we're going to dive into some best practices for searching on JSTOR. This'll be a long one!
The first thing to note is that JSTOR is not Google, so searches should not be conducted in the same way.
More on that in this video:
youtube
Basic Search on JSTOR
To search for exact phrases, enclose the words within quotation marks, like "to be or not to be".
To construct a more effective search, utilize Boolean operators, such as "tea trade" AND china.
youtube
Advanced Searching on JSTOR
Utilize the drop-down menus to refine your search parameters, limiting them to the title, author, abstract, or caption text.
Combine search terms using Boolean operators like AND/OR/NOT and NEAR 5/10/25. The NEAR operator finds keyword combinations within 5, 10, or 25 words of each other. It applies only when searching for single keyword combinations, such as "cat NEAR 5 dog," but not for phrases like "domesticated cat" NEAR 5 dog.
Utilize the "Narrow by" options to search for articles exclusively, include/exclude book reviews, narrow your search to a specific time frame or language.
To focus your article search on specific disciplines and titles, select the appropriate checkboxes. Please note that discipline searching is currently limited to journal content, excluding ebooks from the search.
youtube
Finding Content You Have Access To
To discover downloadable articles, chapters, and pamphlets for reading, you have the option to narrow down your search to accessible content. Simply navigate to the Advanced Search page and locate the "Select an access type" feature, which offers the following choices:
Tumblr media
All Content will show you all of the relevant search results on JSTOR, regardless of whether or not you can access it.
Content I can access will show you content you can download or read online. This will include Early Journal Content and journals/books publishers have made freely available.
Once you've refined your search, simply select an option that aligns with your needs and discover the most relevant items. Additionally, you have the option to further narrow down your search results after conducting an initial search. Look for this option located below the "access type" checkbox, situated at the bottom left-hand side of the page.
Additional resources
For more search recommendations, feel free to explore this page on JSTOR searching. There, you will find information on truncation, wildcards, and proximity, using fields, and metadata hyperlinks.

The Ultimate Guide to Passing Query Parameters in the Search Blueprint
Tumblr media
Introduction:
In this documentation, we will explain how we are fetching the query parameter from the request to add the value to the custom parameter of the search context, which is accessible in the condition values of our sample search blueprint.
Below are the steps we have taken to achieve this:
We have created a sample blueprint. In this blueprint, we have created a parameter in the parameter configuration, and the value of this parameter is compared to the query’s condition.
Tumblr media
Below is the condition that we are comparing for the custom parameter in our sample blueprint.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
To create this  parameter and pass its value to the blueprint, we have overridden PortletSharedSearchContributor by creating my custom module CustomBlueprintParameterContributorPortletSharedSearchContributor
We have added a condition to pass the custom.orderBy parameter from this module in the searchContext object on the basis of the query parameter value.
 The added code snippet:
ThemeDisplay themeDisplay = portletSharedSearchSettings.getThemeDisplay();
if(themeDisplay.getRequest().getParameter(“orderBy”) != null) { if (themeDisplay.getRequest().getParameter(“orderBy”).equals(“newest”)) { searchRequestBuilder.withSearchContext( searchContext -> { searchContext.setAttribute( “custom.orderBy”, “newest”); } ); } if (themeDisplay.getRequest().getParameter(“orderBy”).equals(“oldest”)) { searchRequestBuilder.withSearchContext( searchContext -> { searchContext.setAttribute( “custom.orderBy”, “oldest”); } ); } }
Integrate the custom portlet into the search page where you want to apply the search changes
Tumblr media
Select the blueprint in which we are passing the custom parameter
Tumblr media
When we are passing the query parameter orderBy as newest it is compared in the blueprint and gives the desired result. OrElse passing the query parameter orderBy as oldest gives the desired effect as given in the sample blueprint.
Conclusion
In this blog, we have provided a comprehensive guide on passing query parameters in the search blueprint. We can dynamically adjust the search results based on the query parameter values by leveraging custom parameters and condition values in the blueprint. Overall, this guide empowers developers to effectively pass query parameters into the search blueprint, enabling greater flexibility and control over the search results presented to users.
